Acanthus mollis, commonly known as bear’s breeches, is a bold, clump-forming perennial noted for its large, glossy, deeply lobed leaves and striking flower spikes. It produces tall inflorescences of white to pale pink flowers with purple bracts in late spring to summer. It is generally deciduous in colder climates but may remain semi-evergreen in mild areas. Its bold architectural foliage makes it popular in mixed borders, Mediterranean-style gardens, and shady garden beds, and it is also valued for its historical association with classical Corinthian column designs.
