Macropiper excelsum, aka Kawakawa or Pepper Tree, is a small tree found in forests and shady spots, and is a NZ native. It is densely branched with heartshaped, prominently veined leaves. The long orange fruit attract kereru, and is becoming increasingly popular as a tea or culinary spice. Frost tender. Evergreen. Grows to approx. 4m x 4m when mature.
